What’s the worst thing somebody can do while driving? Playing with the radio? Texting? Eating a sandwich? What about driving while drunk, stoned, and with a small amount of marijuana and an open container in their lap? Yup, pretty moronic.
But what happens when you take that combination, and strike a police vehicle from behind while at a high rate of speed? Yeah, better call your dad’s fancy lawyer, buddy. That’s exactly what happened in South Brunswick, New Jersey at around midnight early one Tuesday morning.
According to a report we’ve read from My Central Jersey, Patrolman First Class Angelo Zecca was seriously injured by motorist, Joseph Mendes, who was driving a 2008 Saturn at a very high rate of speed. Mendes, who’s just 24 years of age, attempted to flee the scene, but was caught by Zecca after the patrolman was able to free himself from the car.
Once Mendes was captured and detained near the scene, police found a small amount of marijuana inside the Saturn. He was ultimately charged with driving while intoxicated, assault by auto, possession of a controlled substance in a motor vehicle, possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana, possession of an open alcohol beverage in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, and other motor vehicle offenses. Whew.
Needless to say, drinking and driving just doesn’t pay. Here’s a Pro Tip: if you insist on becoming a statistic and having a crash, don’t hit the police car or the soccer mom in the minivan. Aim for a ditch instead.
In case you’re wondering, this isn’t the very first Caprice PPV to bite the dust in our country. After doing a quick internet search we found at least one other example that had its life cut short.
