Video: Flat Out In Crackerbox Racing Boat Eats Piston

As gearhead guru’s, inevitably, we’re drawn to other sources of transportation. Whether it be planes, trains or automobiles, if it’s got some form of propulsion, wheels or an engine, chances are we’re already doing our best to run down the latest and researching more about it. With the availability of the internet, information is endless. There is of course one last frontier, which seems to be overlooked, especially in the world of motorsports. You see, small- and big-block engines aren’t just stuffed into muscle cars or weirdly contrapted vehicles for pleasure. So, what’s left? The water…

Boats too need love. The boating culture is just as rich with passionate and inspirational people as any diehard hot rod or pro-touring community. Besides, where else can you find rev-happy, triple digit speeders? Remember, there’s no roads, no lanes, no speed limit. Safe and sane is the only law of the waters, which is exactly why we couldn’t help but showcase the flat out, high rpm flyby’s of P-9 “Miss Suncoast” – a crackerbox racer. Crackerbox racers are the dirt track racers of the water and it shows. With minimal draft in the water and a scags underneath the short hull, it allows these boats to become incredibly fast and maneuverable.

What seems to be a small test day on the lake for some full throttle passes, unfortunately, turns out to end rather quickly as the oil breather eventually gives up the ghost; spraying oil through the filter. After a couple warm up laps to get the oil up to temperature, throttle-man Scott “Hollywood” Schatz gets into it at the 4-minute marker. However, “Hollywood” has to shut it down quickly after the 5:18 minute marker, thankfully on his return line in to the dock.

While you may not be impressed with the speed, we highly suggest you crank up your speakers to experience this 309ci., 525hp Chevy small-block crank out some beautiful music. With a front-mounted engine, short stroke, high revving capabilities and long tubes headers, which dump on either side of the boat, you’re seated for a thrill ride.
