It’s already been proven time and again just how good the ZL1 can be even in stock form, but we all know that stock anything just isn’t quite as much fun. In this video from YouTube we get a look at a ZL1 that the guys at Late Model Racecraft, in Houston, Texas, have given a little more gumption thanks to some relatively simple modifications. In completely stock form, the auto-trans ZL1 made 465 horsepower and 462 pound feet of torque at the rear wheels.
Once they had their baseline, LMR went right to work. The modifications to the ZL1 include 2.55 inch upper supercharger pulley, 160 degree thermostat, an LMR Cold Air Induction System, a 10% overdrive harmonic balancer, bigger 65 lbs/hour injectors, and the obligatory dyno tune to get the most out of the whole combo. The “after” test on the dyno revealed a massive bump from the stock numbers – 588.4 horsepower and 608.8 pound feet of torque.
So, the question now becomes just how quick a ZL1 can run with an additional 123 horsepower and 143 pound feet of torque at the rear wheels. So, LMR and the car’s owner headed out the Royal Purple Raceway, in Houston to find out. On street tires and pedaling out of the hole the modified ZL1 managed to turn in an ET of 11.43 at 121.8 MPH. It’s a respectable time all things considered, but there seems to be some tenths left on the table. You have to wonder just what this beast could do with a set of drag radials, a higher stall converter, and a much harder launch.
