The retro look seems to be all the craze these days when it comes to modern muscle cars, but we have yet to see the late model Chevrolet Corvette with any iconic design cues from the past. So what might a modern retro-style Corvette look like? Well according to CarBodyDesign, a retired GM designer has recently used his talents to come up with a sketch of what a 1959-inspired Corvette might look like if it were made today. Hat tip to Mitch Talley over at CorvetteBlogger for bringing us the news.
Nelson Barros worked for GM as a design studio manager for General Motors Brazil from 1969 to 2006. Although Barros retired a few years ago, his talents for designing vehicles have not deteriorated, and he is in fact using them to create futuristic drawings of some classic car remakes.
As you can see, Barros’ modern interpretation of a ‘59 Corvette maintains the classic red and white paint scheme as well as the front fascia design of the first-gen model. However, the drawing also incorporates some artistic design cues from modern vehicles. It even looks like it shares some similarities with the redesigned Ford Thunderbird that came out in 2002 based on the classic 1955 car.
The Chevrolet Corvette isn’t the only car Barros has used his talents to render in a modern light. He also sent CarBodyDesign concept sketches of the Jaguar XK 120, the ‘73 Ford Maverick and the ‘50 Studebaker Commander.
All of these concepts are rather impressive. Unfortunately, they are just that – concepts. But we have seen concepts turned into tangible cars before, so who knows, you may just see a retro Corvette produced in the future.
