Sweet Chevelle: Sam Weathers’ 1966 Big Block Chevelle

The portal into the world of drag racing is pretty large, and racers sometimes just wander into it by accident. Sam Weathers really plan on building his stunning 1966 Chevelle…he already had a nice car, but going to the track with friends introduced him to the sport. Now, Weathers has a legit racecar that could win any car show it enters.

Weathers has always been a GM guy and has an amazing 1982 El Camino that runs low 7.40s in the 1/8-mile, the problem is the car became just too nice to race. After examining his options, Weathers decided it was time to build something he could take to the track and not worry about how it looked.

“I wanted to build a racecar and my friends thought I was sick. I wanted to feel what they felt with the big-block power and leaving off a transbrake. We started looking, and after checking out 20 cars we hadn’t found anything I liked. One of my friends had told me about this 1966 Chevelle and I thought the car was too big so we never looked at it,” Weathers says.

On a rainy Sunday afternoon, Weathers was finally convinced by his friends to check the Chevelle out. One look at the car made Weathers realize it might not be so bad after all and he made a deal to purchase the Chevelle. When Weathers got the car home, he went to work making it his own by purchasing some chrome parts, upgrading the suspension, and having the car painted. The final product is an immaculate 1966 Chevelle powered by a 468 cubic-inch big-block that lays down low six-second 1/8-mile passes.

“I enjoy going to the track and just hanging out with my friends and meeting new people. We go to races like WOOOSTOCK early just to spend time at the track and have a good time with our hot rods. This car is a blast to drive and people love to check it out since you don’t see many of these at the track anymore,” Weathers says.
