The full-size 1968 Chevrolet Impala was one of the most popular cars available that year. Well known for its performance and stylish appearance, it isn’t hard to understand why they are sought after today. We usually associate these cars as either a hardtop or a convertible, and often forget they were also available in the form of a wagon.

When we saw this 1968 Impala wagon, we had to talk to the owner and find out more, because who wouldn’t want a family-sized Sunday driver? The owner of this car is Galadriel Day, and she lives in Shoreline, Washington. “The best part about driving and showing this car, apart from the ride itself, is the response we get from people,” Galadriel told us. “This car gets a positive reaction from people who’ve never seen one, or even better, from people who grew up riding in the back-facing seats.”

There is something special about these old wagons. It must be because it is a family-oriented build that still packs a punch under the hood. Although only a 307 cubic-inch engine, it is original to the car. She says that it starts, runs, and drives just like it is new, and in 1968.

1200-8The car’s name is Ada, and that comes from the original owner of the car. Galadriel is the third owner, and the second owner named the car after the first owner. It only has 69,000 original miles on it, so when Galadriel and her husband ended up with the car, there really wasn’t much that needed done. “It was near mint when I bought it,” Galadriel told us, “but I did repaint the vehicle bone white with an ice blue metallic flake. It has basically received a light rust-oration.”

The previous owner had also cut the springs to lower the car, so it was “slammed,” and it drove really low to the ground. “It bounced really hard,” Galadriel told us. “Since I wasn’t into whacking my head on the roof, I had my mechanic raise it up.” Now it still rides a lower than stock, but isn’t flat on the ground like before.”

As much as Galadriel and her husband don’t want to sell the car, they just don’t have enough room, so it’s got to go. Having just had a baby, it is time to sell one of their cars. The Impala was the one they decided they could let go of.

The custom sound system in this car is designed so that the speakers are in boxes painted to match the interior, rather than placed in holes cut in the doors. If you’re worried about the original wheels and hubcaps, they are included in the sale. “I have original wheels with radials and hubcaps still on them,” Galadriel told us, “in case future owner doesn’t like the rims.”

If you are in the market for a good looking, family-sized car that is powered by a small-block Chevy engine this will make a cool cruiser. With plenty of space for kids, friends, and grocery’s, what’s not to like? As a car that has never been heavily modified, one could also look at it as a blank canvas, ready to be made into whatever project you can dream up. If you are interested, don’t hesitate to give Galadriel a call or send them an email. You can see the original ad here.
