We use this tool to lift up cars. We also use this tool to position and lift transmissions, rear ends, or force a pesky control arm into position. This invaluable tool is the hydraulic floor jack. Almost every time you work on your car, whether that’s changing a set of brake pads or the oil, a floor jack is required. 

History:

These tools have come quite a long ways in the past 100 years and all for the better. Early versions were mainly gear driven and not nearly as safe or proficient in moving loads. Although today many cars and trucks are still equipped with gear driven floor jacks that are to be used in an emergency only. These versions usually require more effort to get a load in the air. 

Present Day:

In current times every floor jack you see will be hydraulic, minus the emergency versions tucked in your car. They are easy to use, can lift an enormous amount of weight, and are fairly compact. Generally there is two different versions. One is your typical cantilever style like you see above, the other is a bottle style you see below. Both accomplish the same task, which is lifting your ride in the air. However the bottle jack usually doesn’t have wheels but is more compact by design. 

New versions can be found that are made out of aluminum. These are great for maneuvering or lifting into the bed of a truck. This adds to the convenience of a floor jack. 

Whichever style you choose, this is an essential piece of equipment in your garage. Floor jacks are such a universal tool that can be used for a multitude of different items. Remember to always be safe when lifting a load though, NEVER trust a floor jack. Always make sure to have jack stands in place when lifting your vehicle.
