GM has been sure to play up the 2014 Chevy SS’s Australian roots – based on the new VF series Holden Commodore, the Chevy SS is the same breed by a different name. With a 415 horsepower LS3 engine, rear-wheel drive, four doors, and a luxurious interior, the Chevy SS adds to the already-mighty arsenal of performance vehicles in GM’s American collection, even if its $44,495 MSRP relegates it mostly to niche buyers.

Down in Oz though, the Commodore is a much more mainstream car, with its own marketing campaign aimed at introducing buyers to the next generation of a very popular family sedan. In this particular extended commercial, the Chevy SS even makes a brief guest appearance to show the international appeal of four-door muscle.

Though neither car hits dealerships until fall, both the Chevy SS and VF-series Commodore are highly anticipated models that step up in terms of performance and quality. GM has been teasing the Chevy SS for more than a year now, though the Aussies had a better idea of what they were getting, including a better interior, hands-free communications, and even a heads-up display, all features also found on the Chevy SS.

However, the Chevy SS, which is shown in the commercial driving down a busy Manhattan street, currently has just one engine option; the 415 horsepower LS3. The VF Commodore, meanwhile, will have the LS3, as well as the 576 horsepower LSA in the HSV GTS version of the Commodore.

There is also a V6 engine option for the Commodore, and it will come in Ute and wagon versions as well. No word on if the Chevy SS will go down that same path, though judging from the commercial, GM seems eager to play up that Aussie heritage and design. So don’t count ‘em out yet.
