Even if you don’t have a zillion-dollar budget for your ride, and all your friends talk smack, just goDRIVEit. This is an ongoing series from QA1 that is a collection of stories about folks who love to drive their cars, regardless of the provenance. Lance Taggert has a bitchin’ 1978 Camaro that he brought back from the dead, and the journey was inspired by James Hetfield and his band of merry metalheads.
Lance explains, “All it took was Metallica’s music video, Fuel, to get me into classic muscle cars. I started growing my knowledge of Chevrolet Camaros and when I turned 15, I bought a 1978 Camaro LT for $1,200. It had no intake, no carburetor, or distributor. I was undeterred and determined to get it back on the road.
“My family isn’t into cars, so I had to figure out how to get it running on his own, even though a lot of people doubted me. With some elbow grease and my natural mechanical aptitude, I proved them wrong! I’m now the ripe old age of 19 years old and I drive it daily, relying on the car to get me to work appointments and everything in between. I also enjoy the occasional donut, burnout, and sliding corner as well.
“Some of my best memories with the car are pulling all-nighters, working on it with friends, and driving it on the back roads from Las Vegas to the Hoover Dam. That led to a muffler getting ripped off, but that just added fun to the experience.
“My end goal is to have a fun, fast, and reliable car that can take me anywhere in the country and maybe do some autocross! I hope to eventually have a 383 or 454 installed with a T56 Magnum to add some power behind it. But in the meantime, I’m just enjoying it! This is what it’s all about.”
