Barn finds are the proverbial Holy Grail of muscle car and auto enthusiast’s dreams. So when we find one online or hear about one from a friend, we all have to hear about it. This amazing find, an original ’69 X22-code SS396 Camaro optioned with aluminum heads is an all matching numbers F-Body which was dug out of a garage after being in storage since the early 80’s.
We spotted this find over on Bring a Trailer, who noted that the car was apparently sold new May 5th, 1969 at Jack Maxton Chevrolet in Worthington, Ohio, only about two miles from where the car was when revealed. Throughout its life, it did make some trips to Indianapolis for some NHRA events between 1970 and 1972, and still wears its numbers and traction bars.
Even the green paint with black striping and rear panel are original. Of course, a car like this is a boon for the auction hungry Barrett-Jackson or Mecum crowd, especially if it is ever to be restored back to its original condition (although, we’d prefer the new owner keep it in its early 1970’s racing trim).
Unfortunately, with the body on jackstands with much of the drivetrain out of it, it isn’t exactly an untouched survivor, but as long as the original paint is as good as it looks, its a sure sign that this original SS396 is the real deal. Heck, the 4-speed rock cruncher transmission ain’t too shabby either!
