Few cars evoke the imagery of power and style that the Impala moniker does. From its inception, the Chevy Impala was a pure muscle car, and over the years models like the 1994-96 Impala SS models amplified that image. But as of late, Impala models have been a bit boring, with little to set them apart from their Malibu cousin, save a higher price.

But GM hopes to change all of that with a fresh take on the Impala, which would make its debut as a 2014 model. GM has seen fit to release the first teaser shot of its new Impala, and the photo, despite focusing of the rear pillar, actually reveals a good deal about this new car.

Set for a New York Auto Show unveil, the next-gen Impala will share platforms with the Cadillac XTS, the new “flagship” model of the luxury line. This is a pretty good indication that the next Impala will be front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive as an option. Expect power to come from a 3.6 liter V6, and possibility the 2.0 liter turbo found in the new Cadillac ATS.

As for this teaser shot, we can tell from the photo that the rear greenhouse will have a long, sloping look to it. GM seems intent on providing a more dynamic driving experience with this new Impala, and we expect it will look the part. Can the 2014 Impala revive passion for the namesake? We hope so. We’d hate to see the Impala disappear from dealerships like so many other iconic brands and names as of late.
