“The horror…the horror…,” were Colonel Kurtz’ final revelatory words in “Apocalypse Now.” Having seen so much hate, carnage and bloodshed over his life, the self-exiled soldier exhaled these final words as a testament to the horrors than mankind is capable of. While we won’t go so far as to say that converting a Corvette into a makeshift station wagon is akin to the worst atrocities committed during the Vietnam war, we will say that it is pretty bad.
Maybe we just need to remind folks what a Corvette is and what it is not. For those unclear, Corvettes are sports cars, like Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Lotus’, and Porsches. They are not ’56 Chevy Nomads, Ford LTD Country Squires, or Oldsmobile Vista Cruisers. Now that we’re clear, we can move on.
We’re all for modifying one’s car. It’s a pretty un-American thought to keep people from doing so, particularly as automotive modification is a quotient of self-expression. But there is something to be said for self-restraint within that very pursuit of self-expression. Listed on Hemmings.com, this particular Corvette wagon is advertised as being a 1 of 10 car, which is great news. There’s only nine more of these things on the planet.
Each time we attack these kits, we get some pretty nasty emails, but we ignore them. Although a kit to convert a Corvette into a wagon (available with or without side windows) was offered through Eckler’s Corvette Parts during the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, it doesn’t necessarily make this ‘Vette a classic. What’s worst is the ludicrous asking price of $125,000.
Consider that this bastard child is equipped with a smog-bogged 350 small block with a TH350 automatic while an original ’70 4-4-2 W-30 or a ’69 1/2 Dodge Super Bee 440 Six-Pack goes for roughly the same price when considering that sum. Yeah, we’re the crazy ones…
