Man, here’s another causality in the war of Man versus Nature. This unlucky GMC Sierra owner had his day ruined when his 1500 slid into a frozen pond, only to roll over ass-over-tea kettle. Thinking the truck could be salvaged, you’ll watch as he and his comrades attempt to winch it with a diesel-powered tractor. Plenty of oomph to yank it out, right? Well, sorta.
Torque really wasn’t the problem with this failed experiment. Rather, it was the execution of the plan that failed. Thinking that his GMC could handle being yanked from the front cross member from behind, he and all his buddies watched in horror as the rig’s chassis folded like a taco shell. Oh yeah, and it’s still still in the frozen pond.
This leaves us asking, “How could have this been avoided?” First, keep your truck away from any frozen-over bodies of water. Second, if you can’t resist the temptation of ice fishing from the tailgate of your truck, keep the heavy end closest to the shallowest part of the lake. Third, if you find your truck upside down and nose first in a lake, call a crane, not your buddy with a tractor.
