Set within promixity of both Sydney and Melbourne, Australia’s “Summernats” motoring event has occurred annually since 1988. Held at the Exhibition Park In Canberra, known locally as EPIC, the Summernats event takes place in what is known as the “gateway to the capital” on the corner of Flemington Road and Northbourne Avenue.
A car and driver who are both epic at the annual, Aussie event are local drag racer Victor Bray and his alky ’57 Chevy post sedan, seen here doing a massive burnout at this year’s Summernats.
The driving force behind Bray’s radical ’57, known as “TUF 57,” is the blown and alky-fed, Chevy big-block that resides within. Bray himself is said to be very much of a “people person,” as he is often seen driving his ’57 post with 4 or more people in the car while he passes out sponsor merchandise.
But much of this is probably because Bray himself comes from humble beginnings. The ’57 Chevy sedan that Bray currently races at the Summernats is the same car that he has raced since the beginning of his career as a drag racer, while he worked as a tomato farmer in Queensland.
Team Bray’s expertise in building and tuning has led to the construction of one fast ’57, and there’s no doubt in our minds that Bray himself won’t be leaving the Summernats scene for a while!
His car, in fact, is simple in appearance but definite in function, as it burns out furiously atop the Canberra concrete. Bray is currently sponsored by Sidchrome, the Outback and New Zealand’s equivalent of Snap-On. With that kind of sponsorship and experience, and with a straight-up ’57 that is nothing short of a fire breather, we all hope to see Victor Bray and his furious Chevy post at next year’s Summernats event.
