Last week a fire was sparked in a Barkhamsted, Connecticut with the only casualties being two electric vehicles. One of the vehicles was a 2011 Chevrolet Volt that had only 2,000 miles on it. The other was a Suzuki Samurai converted to electric by the home owner. Thanks to our fellow auto enthusiasts at Autoblog.com for bringing us the news.

The fire occurred on the evening of April 14. The fire started in the garage of the Barkhamsted home. Luckily, there was a thick firewall between the garage and the adjoining living area, so damage was almost exclusively contained to the garage. Only a little smoke and water damage was reported to have occurred to the rest of the house.

Initial allegations were made that one of the hybrid vehicles charging in the garage was what caused the fire to spark, although investigators had not concluded their investigation at air time from the local news channel WTNH. Storm Connors, owner of the house and vehicles stated to the WTNH reporter that he liked his cars too much to even consider that the fire was started by one of them charging. Another news channel in the area, WFSB, stated that fire officials were considering the charging cars to be a possible cause to the blaze.

This story hits close to home for Autoblog.com because Connors has commented on some of their green vehicle posts in the past. For Connor’s sake, we hope that the cars were not the cause of the fire but anticipate the announcement to come. We wish him and his wife the best when repairing the damage and are thankful that no one was hurt in the blaze.
