You know what GM needs right now? A new El Camino. We’re serious about this, and the timing couldn’t be perfect. With the popularity of car-based SUVs known as “crossovers”, consumers seem ever more willing to embrace vehicles with car-like driving qualities. The original El Camino was based on the Chevy Chevelle, so is it really a stretch to imagine a modern take on the El Camino, but with a Camaro twist?
Thankfully, we don’t have to imagine such a vehicle because it already exists. Hooniverse was out at the Daytona International Raceway recently, and stumbled across an El Camino/Camaro hybrid that is cool enough to have us wondering why GM hasn’t already done this.
From behind what we have dubbed the “El Camaro”, one might think they’re merely looking at a done-up classic El Camino. Sure, some people might not like the Corvette-like taillights or the tonneau cover, but the interior has a high-quality look to it that is warm and inviting…for the most part. We’re not sure what’s up with the dagger on the dashboard, but to each their own, right?
But the real goodies are up front, in the form of a Corvette V8 engine and a front clip taken from a 5th-generation Camaro. The transformation is seamless, and looks damn good if you ask us. We’re not sure what’s up with the forward-mounted butterfly hood scoop, but there is no doubting that this one-of-a-kind El Camaro is an attention grabber.
With GM yet again bringing a Holden vehicle to the U.S. market in the guise of the Chevy SS, we’ve got to wonder why the idea of a new El Camino hasn’t garnered more attention. With the Camaro rated at 30 mpg on the highway with a V6 engine, a modern Camaro-based El Camino could easily offer utility and fuel economy in an affordable and attractive package.
Come on GM, make this happen!
