Whether it is between professional race teams, amateurs at the track or just guys talking smack to each other on the streets, rivalries are a part of the automotive world. While these rivalries may get intense, no battle of the wits goes as far as those between automotive manufacturers, and consequently, the people who vow by one company over another. These rivalries are so intense, that Jalopnik asked their followers which rivalries were the most vicious. With no surprise to us, the battle between Chevrolet and Ford topped the list.
Chevy and Ford have been after each others’ throats since the very beginning. Just like all automotive companies, the two Detroit giants are after making the best, fastest, most powerful and most popular cars on the market. Traditionally, this means doing what the opposing company does, just a little bit better. This holds true with all of the vehicles that Ford and Chevrolet have produced, most notably those in the muscle car era.
Following Ford’s introduction of the Mustang in 1965, Chevrolet strove to produce something that would not only beat Mustangs on the track, but also capture the hearts of Americans better than the famed pony. The result, as you all know, was the Camaro and the rivalry between Ford and Chevrolet has never been the same.
To this day, Ford and Chevrolet battle it out every year on the track, in the market and in the souls of the people who are wholly committed to one of the two brands. Nothing speaks louder of this rivalry than the recent announcement of Ford once again trying to one-up the modern Camaro by boosting the power of the ‘13 GT 500 to a whopping 650hp. While this comes as no surprise to us, it just goes to show that rivalries die hard.
At least we know that neither company will be letting up soon, resulting in even greater performance from vehicles to come. So with that promise for the future, we say long live the Chevy/Ford battle, no matter how vicious it may be!
