As GM is in the middle of gearing up it’s 2014 model year Impala replacement that’s due out in the first quarter of 2013 (which presumably, will make an introduction at next year’s auto show), many of us never really took to the current model with much enthusiasm.
Sure, there was the short-lived SS variant of 2006-2009 that came packing 303hp and 5.3 liters of LS4 power, but many onlookers never realized that car’s true potential and casually dismissed it as another example of badge marketing. But after a couple of years of GM pumping out only the pedestrian versions since then, they finally decided to inject the neglected W-body with some overdue pizazz – at least to an extent, anyway.
Armed with a new grille and a revised rear fascia, the 2012 Impala also has a new standard engine and transmission package which should help boost fuel economy and performance. Chevrolet didn’t have to look too far for a source when it came time to replace the current 3.5L (211hp) and 3.9L (230hp) V6 engines. All they had to do was look to their reborn pony car for inspiration and that of course, was the 3.6L direct-injected V6 that is found in the Camaro -which in the Impala is good for 302hp and 252ft.lb.
Backing the 3.6 is a six-speed auto, a first for the model and a welcome replacement over the ancient four-speed example that’s been around since 1846. There has been some shuffling around of standard features for 2012, and the Impala will still be available in LS, LT, and LTZ trims like before. As of this writing, there are absolutely no leaked pictures to be found anywhere of what the revised rear facia looks like, so keep your eyes peeled for further developments of this story.
