Under the category of “you don’t see this everyday,” we have found a very unique and original first generation Camaro custom build. Before everyone start’s jumping on the “that’s horrible” bandwagon, we want to remind everyone that custom builds are about the engineering that the builder puts into the project. It might not be our cup of tea, but the real car guy will respect the effort and work that went into the build. We should also point out that this car’s owner has passed away and it is being offered for sale by his family.
According to the eBay ad, “This was my fathers car, who passed away recently,” the seller explains. “He owned it for about 35-40 years. I’m not sure on the mileage, I’ll have to look, but it’s probably not original miles. He did all the work on it himself. I will tell you what I know about it. 350 small-block Chevy engine, Borg Warner Super T10 transmission. It has new tires on it. A Cherokee was used for the 4 wheel drive set up.”
On the surface this sounds pretty neat. Our only real concern was the convertible frame. The first generation convertibles were known to have some frame issues, especially at cruising speed. A vibration in the convertible frame at speed caused GM to add vibration dampers (cocktail shakers) to each corner of the car to settle the oscillations down. Jacking this frame up and using Cherokee drivetrain must have really made this a rough ride!
Like the seller said, “This is a used car, custom built, not perfect but a fun car.” We agree. It looks unique and probably a lot of fun.
