Fresh out of its centennial year, Chevrolet is aiming to celebrate yet another major benchmark this summer. As we found out from CorvetteBlogger, Chevy will be celebrating 60 years of the Corvette at the Goodwood Festival of Speed held in the U.K. This celebration comes slightly sooner than some may have expected, but there’s good reason to mark 2012 as the unofficial 60th anniversary of America’s favorite sports car.
While you may be thinking that the first Corvette didn’t appear until late in 1953, the concept car known as EX-122, which led to the development of the Corvette model, was actually designed a year earlier in 1952, debuting at the January 1953 GM Motorama.
Designed by GM Vice President of Design Harley Earl with the intention of being an affordable modern sports car, the EX-122 was Chevy’s answer to the competitive MG and Jaguar sports cars at the time. Turned into the Corvette for 1953, the original concept is what started the legendary life of the little two-seater sports car.
With over 1.3 million Corvettes built to date, Chevy is set to celebrate their original Corvette creation June 28th through July 1st at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Goodwood House, West Sussex Britain. This will be the third year in a row that Chevy has attended the event which is known as Britain’s premier automotive event.
What a 60-year period its been for the Corvette, with six generations and countless iconic sub-models along the way. We can’t wait to see yet another 60 in the future for our beloved sports car.
