Malibu Monday: Cutting and Welding the Rear Frame Section

The crew at American Modern Insurance Group has made some huge strides on their ’65 Malibu SS project car. But now with the new year finally here, we’re set to see even more headway made on the classic Chevy. So hold on to your hats ladies and gents and check out what the crew of The Build has been up to lately in the video above.

malibu_monday_rear_framework_2Last week, the American Modern crew made their 1965 Malibu SS’s frame into a roller. This week, there’s more framework in store, as the crew works on cutting and welding the rear section of the frame to give their project car the best base possible. But before any cutting can be done, the body of the car must be mounted to the frame to give the crew attachment points to work off of.

The donor frame salvaged from a severely burnt GTO was in pretty good condition, save the rear section which had some rust issues and old botched repairs. So to remedy this issue, the crew of The Build cut off the rear section of the Malibu’s original frame to weld in the damaged section’s place.

malibu_monday_rear_framework_3With measurements made and gaps determined, the rear frame section of the donor frame is cut off and replaced with the original Malibu frame piece. A bit of grinding ensures a snug fit without the two frame sections overlapping, potentially causing a problem.

malibu_monday_rear_framework_4With the old frame section fitted to the rear of the GTO frame, the piece is then sleeved and welded from the bottom before being welded all the way around once the car’s body is once again removed from the rolling frame.

With the frame fully secure, the American Modern crew can now move on to cut off and replace the shotty body mounts that had previously been repaired on the original frame.

Check back next week as we dive even deeper into the Malibu SS project car in the new year!
