It might almost seem that Chevrolet was the only company with an announcement at the Chicago Auto Show. GM’s PR weenies should get some props for the buzz running up to the show, as well as the product information now available.
Selecting the ZL1 name was a pretty masterful stroke, although the new car has been designed for purposes much different than the original ZL1s were put to. According to GM information, “The central goal of the car’s development was creating something new – a Camaro intended to reach optimal lap times on top road-racing circuits and excellent driving dynamics on the street.”
High performance Camaros have been used both for drag and road racing since they were first available, but the venerable Z/28 was specifically designed to dominate Trans Am racing, which it did. It appears that we have a repeat of history and the future could get very interesting on the road courses of America.
Check out the hot video below. It almost looks as if Chevrolet has started on their pace car graphics already. Will the next Indy Pace Car be a ZL1? I’d bet on it. Will Miss Evelyn be driving it? Hmm…
