This is a neat look back in time at a commercial for the then new 1966 Chevelle SS 396. The commercial is for people who look for “the new, the exciting, the different, here comes the SS 396!”
The video shows a group of people in their 20’s and 30’s playing around. They appear to be skiing down a mountain of sand by the beach, laughing contagiously the entire time.
The announcer boasts that the Chevelle has “A new kind of suspension, to unwind every curve, and smooth every road.” We see the suspension cycling through its range of motion, showing that this car rode smoothly for 1966.
In 1966 the Chevelle SS 396 had three different variations according to ChevelleStuff.net. All three were 396 cubic inch motors, but with different horsepower ratings. The three ratings were 325hp, 360hp and 375hp. You also had a choice in transmissions from a two speed power glide up to a four speed manual. There is no mention of which variation the Chevelle in this video has.
“Special wide tread red stripe nylon tires” were advertised, but we know they were no match for the 396 cubic inch engine. This car was made to be a family car but also a bruiser at the drag strip.
The car is seen flying around the roads, hovering over bumps and taking corners with ease. The lovely female passenger is happy and excited to be riding in the brand new Chevelle SS 396. If only we could go to our local Chevrolet dealer and pick one up brand new right now!
