Video: Turbo Upgraded Duramax Makes 500HP, Easy

If you haven’t already figured out, upgrading your current Duramax diesel platform is fairly simple. As we’re sure you’re well aware, turbo-powered vehicles respond greatly to aftermarket additions. The idea is simple, increase flow by way of intake or exhaust, add more fuel and viola!

With a whole mess of aftermarket plug ‘n’ play tuners available, intake and exhuast components available, it’s only a matter of time before the basic bolt-ons just won’t suffice. If you need another kick in the pants, upgrading the factory, Garrett turbo with a larger, aftermarket piece can certainly get the job done. What’s more, the turbo upgrade installs just like the factory unit.

For this video install, Cory Tyler of D&W Performance takes the reigns on a ’07 1-ton LB7 Duramax diesel and illustrates how to upgrade your very own Duramax diesel with the Garrett PowerMax Stage 1 Turbocharger. For this install, Tyler uses a Duramax which already sports a Bull Dog programmer, AFE intake and MBRP dual exhuast system.

The new Garrett PowerMax Stage 1 turbo upgrade is a viable source to add some extra power to your current Duramax setup. Garrett’s Stage 1 system utilizes the stock turbo’s configuration, which is also produced by Garrett. This upgrade uses journal bearings and the same AVNT design as the stock turbo but with its increased compressor and turbine flow its capable of supporting up to 500HP.

If you haven’t already guessed, more flow means more power across the board. Of course, getting access to the factory unit is a bit of a task. Tyler makes it look easy and explains that most, if not all, of the air ducting, A/C compressor and the some of the front fender well must be removed first. From there, it’s essentially a bolt-on job and requires nothing but some basic hand tools. This means the Garrett PowerMax Stage 1 turbocharger can be installed during the weekend in your garage at home.

Stay tuned for the end of this video. Cory Tyler makes certain to take the viewers on a test drive of the new system. Tyler illustrates with some acceleration testing and even shows how the newly boosted Duramax can roll into the throttle for passing.
