Aggressive marketing by auto manufactures has been around since the beginning of time. Chevrolet was there with the best of them, making sure that they were number one in the dealer and customer spotlight. Of course, back in the ’60s, they were a lot more bold than nowadays.
This video is a half hour long of pure 1966 awesomeness, in a western setting. They go through the entire Chevrolet product line, comparing each model in depth compared to their Ford counterparts. What’s interesting is that since there wasn’t a Camaro in the 1966 Chevrolet line up, they compared the Ford Mustang to a Chevy Corvair. Personally, a Nova would have been a better comparison.
Another interesting aspect is that the video does compare some other General Motors models, such as the 1966 GTO when looking at the Chevelle. Naturally the GTO outperforms the Ford models, but still gets beat by the Chevelle in every test from emergency braking to quarter mile and half mile racing.
Comparing pick-ups they take a look at the El Camino and Ranchero. Sheriff Wyatt Earp and his trusty deputy race the two, with beds loaded full of hay. At one point the deputy switches to a Mustang fastback in an attempt to beat the loaded down El Camino, but still can’t catch the Sheriff.
No matter which Chevy, the Chevelle, Nova, C10 or van, they always beat the Ford. While we love our Chevrolets, we have to think that this video is a bit far fetched and wouldn’t fly by todays standards. Either way, this is a great look back in time and to see some high quality video of the ’66 model year still brand new.
