Ken Brewer may not sound familiar to you. To us, he’s relatively new and our favorite hero in the world of underground motorsports in the Mega Truck arena. To some extent, Brewer has become more of a myth than man. We honestly can’t find a shred of evidence he even exists. All we can bring to the surface are countless YouTube videos brought to you by Busted Knuckle Films of wide-open throttle exploits illustrating Brewer piloting his full-tilt, Chevy pickup in a drag race and autocross style course, outfitted with jumps, whoops, turns and car-swallowing mud pits.
The truck is loud, mean and goes by the name, “Steamboat.” Yeah, we can see why. If that doesn’t get your attention, it’s safe to assume you have no soul. Just like an action movie, the drama begins as soon as Brewer fires up Steamboat.
From Steamboats initial stage, foot-to-the-floor attitude, drag car -style weight transfer during launch, it seems like the baddest truck ever built. Steamboat skims across the water like a jet boat, tumbles over jumps, soaks up whoops like a Baja 1000 Trophy Truck and dances around corners like some of our favorite European coupes on hand carved V-Tread rubber.
Steamboat’s tractor-sized paddle tires seem to scoop water up, allowing the truck to come on plane just like a boat; easily skipping across the mud pit. Yeah, it’s really that amazing and left everyone in the office with their jaws on the floor. “Holy hell, is that even possible?”
Making every single piece of farm equipment jealous, Steamboat sports tons of lift on all four corners to suck up the bumps and house over-sized tractor tires. To bring this Gravy-bullet back down to School zone speeds, Steamboat relies on a monster truck-like rear differential style disc brake setup. You won’t find the factory leaf spring setup on this rig. Adjustablilty for swallowing up jumps and pits comes in the form of off-road style coilovers for rebound and bounce.
To cool off its powerplant, an oversized radiator with electric fans piggy-back the tube chassis bed area, which not only keeps the radiator high and dry, but prevents the radiator from getting caked with mud. Have you ever tried washing off 2-day old dried mud from your radiator? Not fun.
These Mega Trucks embody the pioneering spirit. Chances are you can’t find a kit to build one. These no-nonsense trucks are built, not bought and compete with a run what ya brung attitude. Mega Trucks are crowd favorites and we can see why. We’ve yet to see one stuck.
