Video: How Does It Look Inside? Taking Apart An Ignition Coil

As a young boy, I loved to see how things worked. I was the kid taking apart my Dad’s power drills, looking over his shoulder when he was working on projects, and generally learning everything I could. This interest is what drove me into wrenching on cars and working in the automotive industry.

It could be said that taking things apart and putting them back drove a lot of people into this industry, whether that’s changing their own oil, becoming a mechanic, or even an engineer. This video shows one man who never lost that interest to take things apart to see how they are made. Here, he’s taking apart an Accel Super-Coil.

Inside the famous yellow housing is the actual copper windings themselves. All this sits in a bath of oil, which he describes as a thicker oil, like a rearend 90 weight oil. Since this is for electrical purposes, we assume that it’s a special oil used in electrical applications. The electrical components consist of a copper wound coil that pumps out 45,000 volts. This allows the 12 volts to come into the coil and fire off 45,000 volts to light the spark plug.

The higher voltage produced by these Accel Super Coils help burn fuel better, resulting in more power. While there aren’t any moving parts inside the Accel coil, the kid inside us all is still interested to see what’s inside the big yellow box. Now the big question, can the guy put it back together and have it still work?
