Another summer means another season of Formula DRIFT, and you know what that means. More tire squealing, track smoking passes done by our beloved modern Camaro drift cars! With the season already well underway, we’ve seen competitors take on the roads of Long Beach and the grueling Road Atlanta course on their way to the third round hitting Palm Beach, Florida next weekend.
Check out some of the highlights of Hankook Camaro Formula Drift driver Conrad Grunewald hitting the Road to the Championship round a couple weeks back in this Lifeblasters video we found on Vimeo above.
It’s no secret that Grunewald and his modern drift Camaro are a pair to beat in the ever popular Formula D series. Last year, Grunewald finished eighth place in points at the Formula D Championship, being beat out by only two other domestic-wielding drivers.
To get to the top in Formula D, you not only have to have mad driving skills, you also have to have a car with the perfect balance of handling and tire-breaking power. For Grunewald, that comes in the form of his ‘10 Hankook Camaro SS. Powered by a GM Performance Parts LS7 engine, the car flies around the many Formula D courses to the tune of 715hp and 615ft-lbs of torque. Wilwood brakes, Forgeline wheels and Hankook tires, as well as a BC coilover and Blu808/CGR front spindles combination make sure the car has plenty of give to go sideways while staying firmly planted on the track.
While Road Atlanta proved to be a little bit rough for Grunewald, with parts breaking in qualifying and his Camaro going into the wall backwards during his second pass against ‘08 Scion TC driver Tony Angelo on Saturday, the Camaro and driver look to be making another run for the top this season. After two races, Grunewald sits in 19th place in a field of over 45 competitors.
We can’t wait to watch Grunewald and his Camaro take on the remainder of the Formula D season in the hopes that a domestic car will take the championship this year. In the meantime, enjoy plenty of tire smoke, rear axle shots and tire squealing fun in the video above.
