There is no substitute for personal experience when it comes to education. Adam Martin knows this all too well. His ’68 Camaro became the source of his automotive and life experiences.
Martin looks back at how entwined his Camaro became within his own family, in fact, the Camaro became a family member. As such, Martin felt obligated to name the valued family member. Like a baptism, the blue Camaro was anointed with the name Lucy.
Martin and Lucy’s relationship began when he was only 16-years old. Knowing very little about maintenance, and even less about life, he began this lifelong journey with nothing more than a friend with a bowtie and lots of dreams.
Starting with a 400ci SBC engine, Martin eventually did his homework and discovered that Lucy had the wrong engine. Realizing that his Camaro was born with a “plain-Jane” six-cylinder engine, he decided to jump a few levels and build a 454ci BBC for his new friend.
Over the course of the next 18-years, Martin had some fun with Lucy, making a few comfortable changes here and there. Some new headers, a trick shifter and some body work – including a paint job by Martin himself – brought the Camaro to where it is today.
Their relationship has grown and changed with time so it makes sense that Martin’s next phase of life with Lucy will include a 302ci small-block with a comfortable five-speed transmission.
We can’t wait to see how Martin concludes his life story with Lucy, but hearing that BBC’s lopey idle and throaty throttle, we bet that he will miss the big engine when it’s gone.
