Dennis Byard of North Tustin, California, is the owner of this absolutely stunning 1938 Chevrolet Master Business Coupe. “I have been a die hard Chevy guy all my life,” Dennis told us. “And I will be 70 in December.” Dennis’ love for Chevys started with the ones that his dad had during the ‘50s and ‘60s while he was growing up. “My first new Chevy was a ’67 Chevelle I bought when I got back from Vietnam.”
Decades later, Dennis saw a Chevy coupe at a car show and fell in love with it. It took three years from there to find one that he could call his own. “The ’38 I found was an older frame-off restoration from the early 2000s,” Dennis told us. “It had about 11,000 miles on the engine.” While it hadn’t been driven much, the drivetrain and paint needed some improving. With a little TLC and a just couple dollars, Matilda came to be how she is today.
Matilda has a solid, mild build that is really meant to drive. “The car has been to shows in Arizona and Northern California,” Dennis told us. “And we do all the local cruise nights.” Dennis doesn’t even own a trailer to take it to distant shows, so he drives it. Over the four years that he’s had the car, Dennis has put 9,000 miles on it.
The drivetrain features a 350 cubic-inch small-block engine, turbo 350 automatic transmission, and an Edelbrock carburetor and aluminum intake. He has also upgraded the drivetrain with GM HEI ignition and custom Hooker headers with three-inch exhaust. The exterior has been treated to a stunning custom paint job that is Orchid Pearl on top and Black Cherry Metallic on the bottom. The paint was mixed by House of Kolor and the Orchid Pearl is actually digitally matched from nail polish.
The ride has been massively improved over what would have been original in 1938 and now includes Mustang II front suspension, rack and pinion power steering, and front disc brakes. The wheels are a beautiful 16×7 American Racing Torq Thrust II that are wrapped in 225/60R16 tires all the way around. The interior has also seen such upgrades as VDO gauges, billet machined aluminum dash trim, Vintage Air A/C, a tilt steering column, and a Grant steering wheel.
