Anyone in the skating world knows that Rob Dyrdek is a legend. Starting his skateboarding career at the ripe old age of 11, Dyrdek is a serious athlete, entrepreneur and the star of shows on MTV. Dyrdek is also a Chevy guy and is always on the lookout for an adventure. So when Chevrolet wanted a cool stunt done with their new Sonic for the “Lets Do This” campaign, Dyrdek was the first guy on the list. The stunt that Dyrdek did on Saturday? A kick flip over the world’s largest skateboard in the Chevy Sonic. The video’s above thanks to mlive.com.
Even if you aren’t a skater, you may know Dyrdek from his collaboration with DC Shoes or from his shows “Rob & Big,” that aired from 2006 to 2008 on MTV, or “Fantasy Factory” and “Ridiculousness” that still appear on the MTV network. If you’re familiar with his shows, it should not come as a surprise that Dyrdek was involved in such a crazy stunt.
A kick flip usually refers to a 360-degree rotation in the air done on a skateboard. Producing the same stunt with a Chevy Sonic was a bit more difficult, but with the help of two ramps and the world’s largest skateboard, which Dyrdek created for a stunt on “Fantasy Factory,” the skate legend was able to pull off the stunt. In order for the Sonic to perform its skateboard debut, it was equipped with a roll cage, race seats and harnesses. Dyrdek was also put in full racing attire, including helmet and fire suit in case something went awry.
Dyrdek’s Chevy Sonic kick flip stunt was part of the “Lets Do This” campaign that is geared toward making a connection between the model and younger potential customers via social media. As we announced a couple months ago, part of the campaign strategy is putting the Chevy Sonic through extreme stunts, like sky diving in Arizona, bungee jumping in California and this kick flip by Dyrdek.
With stunts like this, it is hard not to get on board with the Chevy Sonic and the “Lets Do This” campaign. Regardless of the car’s compact size and four-banger under the hood, we’re looking forward to seeing more Chevrolet Sonic stunts like this in the future.
