By now, every high-performance enthusiast realizes the value of a good vibration damper that helps deal with torsional vibrations created within an engine. ATI Performance Products has figured out how to combine quality with economy with the Super Damper rebuilding kit.
OEM auto manufacturers have typically used the elastomer-type damper design with a single elastomer strip bonded between the inner and out ring that make the damper. These elastomer-type dampers have proven very effective in OE applications when used at typical street rpm. Surprisingly, these elastomer-type dampers were also effective at higher engine rpm as well. There have been many engineering studies that have shown the elastomer style dampers to be very good in controlling vibrations over a wide range.

The problem with OE-style elastomer dampers was premature failure when used on engines that continually see high rpm usage. Single strip elastomer dampers have a tendency to have the rings slip in relation to the crankshaft keyway under hard torsional loads. This is an inherent problem due to the manufacturing process limitations. Because of these limitations, it is also impossible to maintain the concentricity of the inertia ring during manufacturing.
The ring must be machined after it’s pressed to the hub, and then balanced after machining. When it works loose with age or from multiple cycles, the ring will move, and the damper will be out of balance.

Conventional single-strip elastomer dampers are not rebuildable. When they fail or have aged and need replacement, the unit is removed and discarded. With ATI’s Super Damper, not only is the damper tuned for the application and manufactured without the same inherent problems that exist in OE dampers, but they are rebuildable as well.
