Last week on The Build, we watched as Smyth Automotive machined the guides for the American Modern 1965 Malibu SS’s big block cylinder heads- a tedious yet important part to improving the performance of an engine. This week, is more improving to do as Rick Drewry moves the engine over to have the three-angle valve job completed and the cylinder heads milled. Check it out in the latest episode above.
Now that the guides for the cylinder heads have been machined and the new valve seals fit properly on the engine, it’s time to move forward with more machining work. This time around, it’s the valves that are getting worked on, as Smyth Automotive cuts 30, 45 and 60 degree angles into the valve seats to give the engine better air and fuel flow.
Smyth also chose to cut into the angles on the valve so that it provides the engine with more air/fuel with less lift, creating more horsepower with less effort.
After the valve seats and valves are cut, it’s on to machining the cylinder heads. Having a smooth, flat surface across the cylinder heads is vital to providing the Malibu with optimal performance and creating a fantastic seal atop its engine block. Once this is done, it’s on to reconditioning and installing the connecting rods. But you’ll have to check back next week for that episode!
