Malibu Monday: Fabbing and Replacing the Shifter Hump & Floor Pan

When building a vehicle that has previously been tampered with, part of the work comes from undoing what other people may have thought was a good idea when they were elbow deep in the same car. That’s exactly what the crew of The Build has discovered in their latest undertaking- replacing the shifter hump and floor pan on their 1965 Malibu SS project car. Check out the previous modification done to the Malibu and how the American Modern crew is undoing the damage it caused in the video above.

In its previous life, the 1965 Malibu SS was modified to accommodate a shifter hump from a 1968 to 1972 Malibu model. But in its current life, the American Modern crew wanted to equip the car with proper components.

To do this, the old shifter hump was removed before the engine and transmission were test-fitted back into the car. Measurements were taken and a proper shifter hump was acquired and configured for its correct location.

Now with the new hump ready to be put in place, Rick Drewry is able to weld it into its proper position with a plan to reinforce the the welds from the bottom once the body of the Malibu is once again taken off of its frame.

Also on the list of “to-dos” is patching the driver’s side floor pan which is riddled with rust damage. Using the floor pan cut from the burnt GTO, which also donated its frame, Drewry can patch the Malibu’s floor pan with little issue.

It’s a long and strenuous process to take a car all the way down to its bare frame and then build it back up, but the crew of The Build is moving along quite nicely on their ’65 Malibu. Be sure to check back next week as the build moves forward even more.
