Last week it was all about finishing the teardown of the engine for the American Modern crew, but this week, the engine moves on to its next step of the process, which means a full inspection from Smyth Automotive. Check it out as the inspection process begins in the Smyth machine shop in the video above.
A 396ci engine from 1969, the Malibu’s power plant is a bit past its prime at this point. But that doesn’t mean that it can’t be done up right to put even the most modern of engines in their places.
The first step to doing this after the initial engine teardown is to have it inspected by a professional.
Rob at Smyth Automotive was American Modern’s expert of choice, so Claims Specialist Rick Drewry loaded the engine block up and transported it down to get the low-down.
Once there, the engine was first inspected for overall integrity and any “tracking” in the dirt of the engine that could signal a problem such as a crack in the block. After that, it was on to check for chatter and components moving around more than they should. From there, the engine was checked for its bore size and wear of the cylinder walls.
After all the plugs are pulled out of the engine, as well as the camshaft bearings, its off to be baked in preparation for the next set of steps. Be sure to check back next week as Drewry continues his visit and engine inspection at Smyth Automotive.
