Taking an engine apart, cleaning it all up and then putting it back together with new components can be a daunting task. No one knows this better than those of you who’ve completed such a process and can empathize with all the time and effort it’s taking the crew from The Build to get their engine back up in working order. This week, the engine is almost ready to go but important components like the camshaft and piston rings must first be attended to. Check out the installation process for these items in the latest episode of The Build above.
With all the engine prep American Modern’s Rick Drewry has been doing with the experts at Smyth Automotive, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. But as the engine nears its finish, it’s only a few more steps to go to have one beast of a power plant.
At this stage in the rebuilding of the engine, its time to mount all the rings on the pistons before installing them into the block.
Once the rings are on, a ring compressor is used to compress the rings into the piston to allow the component to slide easily into its position in the engine block. In the process, Smyth Automotive also opted to use crank savers to prevent the rod bolts from marring up the crankshaft when installing the pistons.
Once the pistons are in place, the camshaft can be installed.
We’re nearing the end of the engine rebuild and that means a complete power plant in the near future. Be sure to stay tuned next week as Drewry and the guys at Smyth Automotive complete the assembly of their Chevy big block.
