Last week when we checked in on The Build, Claims Specialist Rick Drewry had taken the disassembled engine block over to be inspected at Smyth Automotive. With everything checked out and the cylinders sized up for a decent bore and hone, the crew was ready to start the engine stripping process to tear the engine down to as good as new. Check out the process in this week’s episode of The Build above.
When we left off last week, the guys and Smyth Automotive were pulling plugs out of the Malibu’s engine block to prep it for the bake oven. This week, we get to see more of an in-depth process and all the tools used to get the project done.
After pulling off virtually everything that could be taken off the block, it was on to the bake oven. Because the block sits in a rotisserie, it is first strapped into a cage before being placed in the oven.
Once secured inside, the engine gets blasted with heat up to 620 degrees Fahrenheit, which burns everything from dirt to paint off the engine. Once its been baked, the block then moves on to the “clean room” where all new plugs will be put back into the engine.
After the engine has been baked and fitted with new hardware, it’s then wrapped up and given back to the customer to be put back together. Be sure to tune in next week to see the results of this process!
