It’s been a long time coming but the big block Chevy meant for the American Modern 1965 Malibu SS is almost done! That’s right- it’s time for final assembly of the 396ci engine to finally happen! Check out the first of two final assembly episodes of The Build above.
Now that the engine has been equipped with its pistons and camshaft, it’s time to move forward to setting everything straight. The first step is to degree the camshaft- which Tony from Smyth Automotive handles effortlessly thanks to his expertise and the information included with the new camshaft from COMP Cams. Once the camshaft is set, its on to putting in a lock plate and bolts to keep everything in its correct position.
The next step in the final assembly is fitting the block with new head gaskets and then setting the cylinder heads in place. Using new ARP bolts, the cylinder heads are bolted into place.
Next is checking the piston and valve clearance before the valvetrain can be assembled. Once the clearance is checked, its on to installing the lifters, rods and rockers. With the rockers in place, Tony can then adjust the lash.
We’re so close to the finished engine we can smell it, but you’ll have to come back next week to see the final steps of final assembly and see the finished powerhouse that will power the refurbished 1965 Malibu SS in the future!
See ya next Monday!
