Legend Racing Entering Outlaw 10.5/ODR For 2014 With New Car

LRE Camaro 2013 - 2

Our friend Steve Roden tipped us off to a new Outlaw 10.5 car entering the fray for the 2014 season, Doug Roden (Steve’s father) is the owner of Legend Racing Enterprises in Illinois, and co-owns the race car you see here with Bill Radamacher. Steve, 28, will be behind the wheel of the Chevy Camaro that’s been tasked with competing in Outlaw 10.5 and Outlaw Drag Radial.

“We are jumping into the Outlaw 10.5 class right now as we feel it will be the easiest transition from the car we ran before. We know what the engine wants, we just need to know what the tire wants, and the tire size isn’t that much different than what we are used to. My dad is most excited about the 315 radial stuff — I haven’t seen him this excited about something in quite some time. We plan to run some of the NMCA series, ADRL Outlaw 10.5, Radial vs. The World at Duck’s [Donald Long] races, and a couple other 10.5 events,” says Steve.

He’s one of the engine builders at Legend Racing Enterprises, and has a pretty good handle on what it’s going to take to get the 525-cube BBC engine set up to perform in the competitive classes they’re planning to enter.

He’ll also be the pilot of the slick Wally Stroupe Race Cars-built, Pro Mod backhalf car.

Midwest Chassis supplied the front suspension, Stroupe built the rear suspension, and AFCO Racing shocks help to fine-tune the whole works.

The engine is based around a Keith Black Oldsmobile 600 engine block stuffed with a Callies crankshaft, Bill Miller connecting rods, and Diamond pistons.

Legend started with a set of solid BMF 405 cylinder heads that have been machined and ported in-house, and Tim at Bullet Cams spec’d out the bumpstick. A Kobelco 14-71 Hi-Helix supercharger is fed by an Enderle injection system and the fuel is fired by the necessary MSD Pro Mag 44.

Alcohol is the fuel of choice, supplied by a complete Enderle fuel system. Stainless Works custom side-exit exhaust runs through a set of huge-by-large six-inch mufflers.

Transmission duties will be handled by a Bruno/Lenco transmission combination with the power running through an ATI Racing torque converter and back to the Strange Engineering Ultra Pro Mod housing.

“This engine is from our ’57, which had an antique four-link, a Powerglide, and a smaller tire. We managed to go low 4.30’s at 175-plus with lackluster 60-foot times. We know there’s a lot left on the table going into 2014,” says Roden.
