Home-Built Hero: This ’67 C10 Is Too Nice To Drive Every Day

C10

We’re always up for a cool, well-built truck, so when Dennis Byard of Tustin, California, reached out and told us about his 1967 C10, we couldn’t have been happier. We knew Dennis from a Street Feature that we did on his 1938 Chevy about a year ago. At the time, he told us: “I have been a die-hard Chevy guy all my life.” Well, a year later, nothing has changed, and he’s built himself one awesome Chevy pickup!

The 3-inch lowered stance looks great on this truck.

This ’67 C10 replaced his modern truck after he retired, that was also a Chevy—a late-model Silverado. “After I retired about two years ago, I realized I really wasn’t driving my daily driver much,” Dennis explained. “I decided I needed another fun ride, so, I found this 67 C10 step side and sold the Silverado.” When Dennis bought the truck, it was a twenty-five footer, or in other words, driver quality and not up to Dennis’s standards. “After a year of busted knuckles and a few bucks, I have made this C10 into a show-quality truck. The problem was, I made it too nice and had to buy myself another daily driver. I found a one owner ’99 S10.”

This is a really clean truck. We love the two-tone color and step-side body style.

Dennis had the body and paintwork redone. “It had more waves than the Pacific Ocean,” he explained. He took the truck to Diamond Coats Auto Body in Santa Ana, California, for the new paint. They also added the chrome strip around the cab to accommodate the two-tone color. Dennis also had the exterior latches removed from the tailgate, large LED lights installed for rear taillights, and new wood and stainless strips added in the bed.

The interior has also been gone over, and features a Grant steering wheel, new door panels, and three-point shoulder harness seat belts. He also has a Pioneer sound system with a CD player. He also added the locking toolbox in the bed so his wife would have somewhere to put her purse when they are at car shows.

The drivetrain consists of a 350 cubic-inch engine taken out of a 1979 Camaro, and Turbo 350 automatic transmission. It’s fueled by an Edelbrock carburetor and aluminum intake, and it’s cooled by way of a custom aluminum radiator. With all that go-power, stopping power is provided by by power-assissted front disc-brakes paired with drums in the back. It also features an HEI distributor, chrome master cylinder, and a chrome brake booster.

The Z28 350 cubic-incher was a good choice for this truck. It's reliable enough to drive daily, but powerful enough to give the truck a good kick!

The entire truck sits 3 inches lower than the stock height, and rides on 18×8.5 American Racing wheels wrapped in 245/50-18 radial tires all the way around. The wheel and tire combo is not only a great look on the truck, but the performance tires give it the grip necessary to keep up with that engine.

Here is Dennis’ fleet of Chevrolet vehicles. He’s a die-hard Chevy guy.

We would be happy to drive this every day, but like Dennis said, it’s just too nice for something like that. The build was designed for show and leisure purposes, and it’s perfect for that, especially now that Dennis has his ’99 Chevy S10 truck to drive every day.

What do you think of Dennis’ truck? Would you drive it every day or just use it for shows? Dennis reached out and told us about his awesome truck. If you’ve got a badass Chevy hiding in your garage, send us an email and we’ll consider it for our Home-Built Heroes segment. We love seeing what our readers are out there driving.
