Acting legend Paul Newman and comedian Adam Carolla don’t appear to have much in common at first glance. Where Newman was a Hollywood heartthrob and noted philanthropist who starred in classic movies like The Great Escape, Bullitt, and Coolhand Luke, Carolla is a more crash and coarse funnyman best known for his outspoken opinions and time spent hosting The Man Show, a classic TV show in its own right. Also, Newman died in 2008, while Carolla is still alive and kicking.

Yet Newman and Carolla both shared an infectious passion for cars, and the comedian recently drove a 1986 Camaro once owned by Newman, at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, for the 2015 Southern California Sports Car Festival.

After the race, Carolla took to his podcast to narrate the post-race action, giving us a bit of insight into what it’s like to drive a purpose-built racing machine. Carolla would ultimately finish in fourth place, after getting over eager in a corner and spinning out (at around the 7:30 mark). Carolla blames his spin out on the fact that he was jumping from one car to the next without actually “dialing it in” for the track.

Why would Carolla be jumping between rides? Well for one, he’s a certified car nut with one of the more impressive collections on the planet. He’s also recently undertaken a mission to collect and restore all of Paul Newman’s former race cars, drumming up interest in the late actor’s little-known racing career.

Besides the number 75 Camaro, Carolla also owns an 1988 Nissan 300ZX once raced by Newman, and there are five other race cars once owned by the Bullitt actor that Carolla is determined to own.

He spent $75,000 to acquire the Camaro, and an estimated $300,000 to $500,000 more to have it properly restored, and the aforementioned Newman Nissan cost another $225,000 to add to his collection.

While the former Man Show host may never be remembered with the same fondness that Paul Newman’s passing elicited, us car guys know that like Newman, Carolla is one of us.
