Is there an easy way to define a classic? Ask a group of enthusiasts, and you might get different answers. Ask your insurance company, and you’ll likely get an answer that confuses you. However, generally speaking, describing a classic is typically defined by a year of manufacture, and if that’s the case, the definition changes every calendar year.
Take for instance the fourth-gen Camaro. I am reluctant to consider it a classic – not because I have anything against the car – but if I do admit that it is “classic,” that means I’m getting older than I care to admit.
Companies like Silver Sport Transmissions (SST) are realizing these later-model cars are becoming popular with enthusiasts and are finally offering performance parts to satiate performance-junky cravings. That’s where the Magnum-F transmission makes its debut.
The Magnum-F is designed to replace the venerable T56 used in 1998-2000 GM F-bodies. Finding a good, usable T56 at a swap meet or salvage yard is getting harder, and this new transmission eliminates the hassle. It incorporates TREMEC’s TR-6060 Magnum technology to provide fourth-gen Camaro owners with a serious performance upgrade.
But, it’s not just fourth-gen F-body owners that will benefit from the new platform. The Magnum-F offers a shifter location that is located between the popular Magnum and Magnum XL’s shifter positions. The new shifter position allows the Magnum-F to fit in a variety of LS-swapped late-model vehicles. This new platform will also work in third-gen F-bodies.
The Magnum-F is a seriously strong unit, as it utilizes the same durable components found in many of today’s OE muscle cars. The new transmission offers increased face-width on all gears, stout double- and triple-cone synchronizers, enhanced webbing in the main case, provisions for a cooler circuit, and more. The shifter has also been upgraded to an isolator-type unit like found on the Magnum XL. The result is a shifter that offers reduced in-cabin noise and vibrations while providing a precise shift feel that is associated with Magnum transmissions.
If you have been thinking about a T56 transmission for your fourth-gen project, why purchase an overpriced, used unit that may or may not be in good condition. You have to agree, it would be a wise decision to upgrade to a new Magnum-F and get a transmission that will withstand the abuse you can deliver.
