2016 Camaro Performance Revealed, 0 to 60 MPH In 4 Seconds Flat

cq5dam.web.1280.1280 (17)GM has already revealed a lot about the 2016 Chevy Camaro, but even though the first ones are already on their way to dealerships, big questions about weight and performance have remained. Well now we have the answers you seek, and just as we expected, the 2016 Chevy Camaro has set a high bar across all three engine lineups.

cq5dam.web.1280.1280 (18)Let’s start with the big guns of the group, the 2016 Camaro SS which now uses the 455 horsepower LT1 V8 borrowed from the Corvette C7. With an eight-speed automatic, GM claims a 0 to 60 MPH time of 4.0 seconds flat and a sprint down the quarter-mile in a scant 12.3 seconds. The SS model also has up to .97 g of lateral grip and the best braking distance of the bunch, stopping in just 117 feet from 60. Those opting for a manual transmission will take two-tenths of a second longer to finish the quarter-mile, and the 0 to 60 MPH dash takes an extra three-tenths compared to the eight-speed slushbox.

At the other end of the spectrum is the 275 horsepower 2.0 liter turbo delivering admirable performance despite its diminutive size. 0 to 60 MPH takes 5.4 seconds with a six-speed manual and the quarter-mile takes just 14 seconds. Meanwhile the middle child, the 335 horsepower 3.6 liter V6, can scoot to 60 MPH in 5.1 seconds and passes the quarter-mile marker in just 13.5 seconds while offering up to .89 g of lateral grip (compared to .85 g in the four-banger).

The key ingredient to the 2016 Camaro’s improved performance comes from a strict diet program via the new modular design that invested over 9 million computational hours finding optimum weight savings. As a result, the base four-cylinder Camaro comes in at 368 pounds lighter than the fifth-gen entry-level Camaro, weighing just 3,339 pounds with the automatic transmission. The Camaro SS also managed to shed significant weight, with the 1SS model coming in at 223 pounds less than the comparable fifth-gen model, even though it adds a bunch of new standard features. The 2016 Camaro 1SS with a manual transmission comes in at 3,685 pounds, a far cry from the nearly 4,000 pound curb weight of the outgoing model.

More power. Less weight. Better performance. Did you expect anything less from the 2016 Camaro?
