Colorado Chevy Enthusiasts Ban Together to Support One of Their Own

It’s never easy to see a racer get in trouble in the heat of competition, especially when it’s a long time friend. But thanks to modern safety precautions, more and more of our fellow competitors are making it out of hairy situations if not just alive, but also moving on their own power. Friends and fans of Colorado racer Kelly Harvey know this all too well.

Less than a month ago, Harvey was competing in the Colorado Street Outlaws series at Colorado’s Pikes Peak International Raceway in his ’55 Chevy when the unthinkable happened. After dancing around the track a bit in an effort to avoid his fellow competitor’s squirrely car, Harvey lost control of the ’55 ultimately sending it flipping down the track.

The car rolled four times before coming to a stop on its wheels, with Harvey’s lower limbs hanging out of the car’s windshield opening.

To the astonishment of onlookers at the track and then the thousands of us that watched the crash video at home, Harvey not only survived the crash but walked away from the wreck on his own two feet. You can see the entire incident unfold in the Live-Online Television/Colorado Street Outlaws video above.

Though Harvey walked away from the crash virtually unscathed, his ’55 Chevy wasn’t quite as fortunate.

Ultimately, Harvey was in amazing condition considering, following the crash but his prized ’55 was in shambles. Knowing how much the car and the sport of racing meant to Harvey, his friends opted to get together and throw a benefit car show in order to help Harvey rebuild the ’55. And we were there to share in the celebration of cars, good company and just how precious life is.

feature_2The “Fix the 55” Car Show was held on Sunday, October 5th at Automotive Performance Center in Loveland, Colorado- where Harvey and his family call home. In addition to a plethora of cool cars and a whole lot of friends and supporters of Harvey, the show brought with it a sense of tranquility not often felt at most bustling automotive events. After all, it wasn’t about who had the nicest car on the lot or the most horsepower. Rather, it was about showing support to a friend and fellow racer after such a terrifying event.

All makes and models of vehicles were welcome at the show, with many people bringing out their favorite American muscle cars. Ford, Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, GMC and Mopar were all represented, but the majority of vehicles fell inline with the Chevy bowtie Harvey has worn proudly on his race car for years.

If people weren’t gathered around ooing and awing over the performance cars on hand, they were partaking in the BBQ, watching over a dozen vehicles get dyno tested by the staff at Automotive Performance Center, or telling Harvey how glad they were to be able to see him alive and well.

In good spirits and good health, Harvey was at the show receiving many pats on the back and handshakes of support. He even helped draw some of the many winning raffle numbers at the event.

Only minorly phased by the events that transpired a few weeks before, Harvey took everyone’s praises and rousings in stride while discussing having gotten back in the drivers seat of his other race car- a classic 1940s Willys- and raced at a local track the previous day.

Harvey is somewhat undecided about where he’ll go with the ’55 from here. With pictures in hand, he discussed purchasing one of a couple different cars and reusing the his previous Chevy’s engine and transmission.

How much is salvageable from the ’55 is yet to be determined.

With dozens of friends and fellow racing enthusiasts at the event, hundreds of dollars were raised to go toward rebuilding the ’55 Chevy, however Harvey and his family see fit. One thing that’s for certain though is that safety in the new car will be the number one priority.

After all, we all want to see Harvey back on the track in his Chevy knowing every precaution was taken to keep him racing for many years to come!

They may be Fords but these two trucks are extra special as they belong to two of Harvey’s kids who came out to support their dad at the event!
