Trans Am Worldwide, the company based in Tallahassee, Florida, that is known for recreating second-gen Firebirds out of 5th and 6th gen Camaros, is back at it with their 70/SS models that reimagine one of GM’s most iconic muscle cars: The classic 1970 Chevy Chevelle. Trans Am Worldwide was in attendance at SEMA this year, and we had the opportunity to get up close with two versions of their latest modern muscle car recreation.

Full Carbon-Fiber Transformation
These aren’t just a 6th-gen Camaro with different front and rear bumpers, the Alpha chassis gets a complete reskin in carbon fiber with new fenders, hood, front bumper, valance, grille, door skins, rocker panels, quarter panels, trunk, rear bumper, and rear valance that completes he look and is six inches wider than the Camaro it’s based on.

The interior also gets classic touches like reskinned leather seats and door panels as well as a “70/SS” steering wheel and either a Hurst shifter or “horseshoe” shifter, depending on choosing the 6-speed manual transmission or 10-speed automatic.

Handling To Match The Power
Underneath, the 70/SS is equipped with lowering springs, high-performance shocks, and stiffer sway bars to improve the handling to match the horsepower options. The calipers are custom-painted and are shrouded in either 20×10.5 and 20×12.5 traditional rally wheels or 70/SS exclusive Mach V wheels with Michelin 285mm wide rubber in the front and 335mm wide rubber out back.

With the bodywork and interior getting a full makeover, that means the sky is the limit for interior and exterior color combinations. Trans Am Worldwide offers three different models and several different engine packages to go in front of whatever transmission you pick.

Three Packages, Endless Power Options
The 70/SS comes in three packages: The Base, 396 Heritage, and the 454 LS6X model, which is limited to just 25 units total. As the name implies, the Base is the entry-level package for the 70/SS from Trans Am Worldwide. It is powered by the same 6.2-liter LT1 that comes installed from the factory in the Camaro SS, which makes the same 450 horsepower as the top-of-the-range LS6 454 big-block in the Chevelle for the 1970 model year.

If you want a little more kick, Trans Am Worldwide offers you some options. You can have a Magnuson 2650 supercharger kit added to boost the power to 675 at the tires, or with the addition of headers and a camshaft kit to the blower package, you can have 800 horsepower.

The 396 Heritage package, seen in blue here, kicks it up a notch with a custom-built Gen V LT that displaces 402 cubic inches. You can have either 800-plus horsepower with the Magnuson 2650 kit, or a little extra coin will get you a twin-turbo setup that makes 900 horsepower.

The Head Honcho
The limited-edition 454 LS6X package, seen here in black, is the top dog, and the engine it comes with offers more than enough power and torque to get you into trouble on the streets or track. Out comes the Aluminum block V8 in the lower models and in its place is an modern fuel injected small block built into an iron-block 454 cubic-inch V8 that makes 900 horsepower with the Magnuson 2650 blower, 1,000 horsepower with a mild twin-turbo setup, or a drag package with a 1,500-horsepower twin-turbo package that comes standard with upgraded transmission, driveshaft, differential, axle shafts, Wilwood 6-piston and 4-piston brakes, and optional drag radials for the rear to handle the power.

Pricey Performance That Turned Heads At SEMA
These specialized 70/SS Chevelle recreations don’t come cheap, with the base model starting dangerously close to $200,000 and the range-topping 454 LS6X with all the bells and whistles surpassing $400,000 easily. Did reading that give you sticker shock? Because it did for us. But by the end of the week, we noticed that it didn’t seem like much of a deterrent at all, as the Trans Am Worldwide staff couldn’t have any time to themselves with the attention these two modern muscle cars were getting from onlookers and prospective future owners the entire week at SEMA.
