Covercraft Car Covers: Choosing the Correct Protection For Your Car

When it comes to selecting a car cover for your pride and joy, do you really know what type of cover your ride needs? There is a big disparity between the materials used to create a quality cover, and knowing what kind of material is best for your application is paramount. To get some professional insight into selecting the appropriate cover materials depending on the situation, we contacted Jeff Jegelewicz of Covercraft.

We've used Covercraft products on many occasions to keep our cars safe and clean, even when in the shop!

Covercraft offers a wide variety of cover materials and styles that provide protection in almost any situation. Here is the cool thing too: they offer more than just basic protection. Every cover offers a different set of benefits and features to fit any number of circumstances. The obscure world of car covers is vast, and even a little more complicated than we initially thought. Our journey started with researching covers to protect a car from the elements, and ended after several hours of playing with the design tools on the Covercraft website.

The Covercraft Sunbrella, Weathershield, and Ultra-Tect car covers.

Let’s be clear here, we aren’t talking about that so-called cover that some discount retail stores sell, claiming it’ll protect your car from the dust and the elements — all for only $40. Is it just us, or does the protection of your classic car mean more to you than a couple of twenties and throwing caution to the wind. Although it might seem like a good idea while you are looking at the discount rack, that chintzy, scratchy fabric isn’t going to do much to protect your investment.

While some might consider discount protection okay, there are those who want a little more quality and a lot more protection, and would be best served taking a look at the offerings from Covercraft. After all, its covers can be customized and tailored to fit your every need. Does your car live outside? No problem, they’ve got you covered. Does it live in a warm and dry garage? Super, they’ve got your back there as well. Not only will they keep your car safe from the elements, the design of the fabric they use is easy on your paint and other exterior surfaces of your car.

Our 50-plus years of experience in the art of hand-measuring vehicles results in custom-fitted patterns that are unmatched in the industry – Jeff Jegelewicz

Jeff gave us some inside information on what makes the Covercraft brand different, as well as some helpful information about some of its products.

Each cover made by Covercraft starts as a custom shaped and form-fitted design. “All of our custom car cover patterns start by measuring the vehicle by hand,” Jeff explained. “Our 50-plus years of experience in the art of hand-measuring vehicles results in custom-fitted patterns that are unmatched in the industry.”

A custom-fit pattern is just the beginning. Each cover is constructed from materials that are purpose-built for each individual application. Covers designed for outdoor use are made with different forms of protection in mind than those for use on cars that spend their down time inside garages.

If your car happens to reside in a damp and rainy climate, such as the the Pacific Northwest, the Kimberly-Clark Noah material is probably your best choice to keep your car dry, as it displays excellent water repellency. If you are in a dry and sunny place like the Arizona desert, the Evolution materials are designed with UV protection in mind. Finally, if your car lives in a temperature controlled garage, but you want to keep the dust off while still being able to look at your beautiful car, the Viewshield cover may be just what you are looking for.

While it might seem like a good idea to throw a tarp over a car that sits outside, in reality, moisture will get trapped under the tarp and cause more damage than the tarp actually prevents. That is one of the great things about the Noah material, not only does it prevent moisture from getting to your car, it ventilates well, and eliminates any moisture that does happen to get underneath.

The Kimberly-Clark Noah

Key Features and Benefits

  • All-weather protection using film barrier technology from Kimberly-Clark
  • Four-layer protection in all weather conditions
  • Highly water resistant
  • UV resistant and breathable
  • Comes with a four-year warranty
  • Fabric is made in the USA
Noah is a four-layer, non-woven material with excellent water repellency. Jeff explained that Kimberly-Clark Noah is one of the best cover materials they offer for exterior protection, and is therefore a customer favorite. This cover hits all the bullet points for ideal outdoor protection. As their website explains, the cover is “highly water resistant, dust resistant, UV resistant, and breathable to help make sure that moisture and/or heat don’t stay under the cover.” Not only that, but it is made in the U.S.A., and is lightweight so it’s easy to handle.

Covercraft makes their covers form fit to each car, you can see how the Noah going on the Corvette does not have a bunch of extra fabric hanging around, and the Camaro is snug under its cover!

The Evolution

Key Features and Benefits

  • Highest UV protection rating of all Kimberly-Clark fabrics
  • Inner layer provides gentle protection for paint finishes
  • Two middle layers of melt-blown fibers filter out dust, pollen, and airborne pollutants
  • Fabric fibers do not absorb moisture
  • Four-layer thickness absorbs impacts to protect against dents, dings, and scratches
  • Breathable fabric allows any moisture or heat to escape easily
If you’re looking for the best cover to offer UV protection in a place like the Arizona desert, then the Evolution material should be your choice. “Evolution is a four-layer, non-woven fabric with superior UV protection,” Explained Jeff. This construction is great, because not only does it provide protection against the sun’s harmful rays, but it also delivers some of the moisture resistant properties that are present in the Noah fabric. The Evolution material is also both breathable and waterproof, so during the rare desert rainstorm your car will stay dry.

The Evolution material is also very popular with enthusiasts, and its thick fabric offers protection from dents, dings, and scratches. It also breathes to allow both moisture and heat to escape, so even in the hot sun, it doesn’t trap the heat inside your car, potentially causing damage to interior components. High temperatures over extended periods of time are not kind to vintage vinyl materials.

The Evolution, like the Kimberly-Clark and Viewshield, is form fit to your car.

The most recently developed cover material that Covercraft employs is used on the ViewShield cover. This cover is unique, because it is ideal for indoor-only protection from dust, but it allows the owner to still see their car. What fun is it to have a beautiful car in your garage if you can’t see it? Now you can see your classic and keep it clear of dust at the same time. As we said, this material is designed for indoor use only, and will keep your ride clean and ready for the next show or Sunday cruise. When protected by a Viewshield cover, you can still see the paint colors, contours, and chrome of your classic.

Have you ever seen a cover that would reveal such detail about the car while keeping it completely safe from dust and debris that could settle on the paint - even in the cleanest of garages.

Covercraft offers several different versions of car covers in addition to the three we took a close look at, and they offer different levels and combinations of protection qualities to suit the needs of just about anyone, in any situation. They even have a line they call Grafix, that offers protection under the guise of a stylishly printed fabric.

Take a look at all the options available on their website's customizer tool. It let's you pick the most important benefits for your situation, and the tool recommends the best fabric style for you.

The covercraft website is a well developed tool, aimed at ensuring you get the right cover for your situation. They have comparison tools that let you look at different covers side-by-side, and make sure that you are getting the correct materials for your needs.
