At first glance, it might seem hard to find any sort of logical comparison between a 2006 Honda Civic and a third-generation Chevy Camaro. Besides being separated by at least two decades, one is a modern, front-wheel drive passenger car. The other a rear-wheel drive “sports car” heralding from a time when carburetors were still offered as an option on many vehicles. What could they have in common.
For one, the 24 Hours of Lemons. Judge and auto writer Murilee Martin posted the odd story of this strange vehicle that looks like the Camaro tried to eat the Civic, and gave up halfway through the meal.
For those unfamiliar with the 24 Hours of Lemons, it is a race where people bring the worst, sub-$500 automobile they can find for an endurance race. Racing automotive wrecks is a lot cheaper than funding a professional racing team. The story behind this contraption involves a wreck that completely totaled the ’06 Civic.
The team had to convince the judges that, after selling off the interior (all the body panels were wrecked) that this shells was worth just $500. And somebody just happened to have a third-gen Camaro body laying around their yard. Why not combine the two! And thus the Civicmaro.
Despite being the “youngest” entry in the race, this combo-car only managed to finish in 15th place. Not even the spirit (and body) of one of America’s greatest automobiles could motivate this Honda to a better finish.
But these two cars may have more in common than you first realize; both have a large aftermarket, dedicated tuners, and legions of fans all over the world. And when ya put it like that, maybe combining and Civic and a Camaro wasn’t such a bad idea after all.
