If you’ve ever seen old car commercials, they can be rather entertaining. Not only are the clothing and the acting in these commercials hideous, the information that the commercials portray is far from superior. In car commercials now, we are treated to hearing statistics and benefits of owning the advertised car. Thanks to a YouTube video of an old Chevelle commercial, we can see just how far car commercials have come.
The Chevelle commercial shows a young, attractive male by ideals back in the day, getting into a new Chevelle and driving it around. The commercial is very much in line with the male dominated ideals of the 60s and 70s- appealing to how “real men” drive. The young man talks about how he likes Chevelle because it will do what he wants it too and how the car doesn’t try to fight him while seeing everything the way he does. The narrator adds how well the reflexes of the Chevelle mimic a man’s reflexes. While I don’t know that this sort of commercial would work now to generate interest in a car, it is definitely revealing of the time period it was used in.
While the video is a bit grainy, this does not deter from its entertainment value. If you need a break from work or are in need of a little chuckle, you should take a look at this video. While a Chevelle may not be your dream car, after seeing this video, you may not be able to resist the car that is “quick size for the driving man.”
