Video: Half a Million 5th Gen Camaros Sold, and Teasing the 6th Gen

While everyone knows that 2015 is the end of the road for the 5th Gen Camaro, up till now there has been no official acknowledgement from General Motors of a successor. Camo’ed test mules have been spotted on racetracks and in the wild, though, and the 6th Gen is anticipated as a 2016 model year release. That means Chevy is running out of time if they want to start delivering customer cars this fall.

Today, the company took a bit of a victory lap for the outgoing Camaro, releasing a video to celebrate a half-million cars sold domestically in the current model’s six-year run. Most of it is just good old Z/28 racetrack pr0n, but at the end we get a few clear glimpses of the dazzle-painted 6th Gen as well. Here’s how Camaro Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser broke the news:

BigOIf you didn’t know better, you could be forgiven for thinking the camo’ed car might very well be a 5th gen – the general profile of the new car carries the same look around the fenders and back glass, and similar contours below the beltline up front. Of course, the 6th Gen will share a platform with the Cadillac ATS, making for a smaller car than the outgoing model, so it will be interesting to see the two parked side by side for comparison.

Look closely at those tail lights - we see a little bit of C7 Corvette in their angular shape.

In any case, we won’t have to wait for too much longer before the new Camaro is finally revealed. What we’re interested in most of all are the available powerplants. It’s a dead lock that there will be a naturally aspirated V8 in the lineup, but will the “base” car get the carryover direct-injected V6 from the 5th Gen, or will it share the 2.5 liter, 202 horsepower four cylinder used in the ATS line? And will there be a place in the new Camaro for the ATS-V’s 450 horsepower twin turbo V6? Let us know what you think in the comments…
