Chevrolet will use the occasion of the Shanghai Auto Show to reveal the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu later this month. The teaser photo above shows Camaro-like LED rear tail lights on the show car. Today’s Malibu was North American Car of the Year when the 2008 model was introduced.
As a pillar in GM’s mid-size sedan offering, the Malibu competes head on with the Hyundai Sonata, Ford Fusion and Nissan Altima, as well as the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord. The eighth generation Malibu will choose from a global family of fuel-efficient and powerful four-cylinder engines, along with six-speed transmissions that contribute to efficient performance. However, the choice of a V6 motor is unlikely.
The Malibu was GM’s top-selling nameplate in 2010, twice named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and garnering three consecutive Consumers Digest Automotive Best Buy awards. The new incarnation will be another global car, like the Cruze, slated to be available in 100 countries across six continents.
The global market that the Malibu competes in represented 9 percent of all non-luxury car sales in 2010 – more than 5.7 million vehicles. The concept/show car version will be shown at the New York International Auto Show, which is open to the public April 23 through May 1.
